Safe Trip Home New Skoolie owner
Here is a List of Items to Help Insure a Better, Safer Road Trip Home For First-Time Skoolie Drivers
The following is a list of items that may help make your journey home a bit safer, easier, and more comfortable:
1. Small ice chest – two each:
a. One to be near the driver that has ice and drinks
b. One to hold food, snacks, and such
2. A power adapter to allow phone chargers, laptops, tablets, etc.
Some school buses come with a DC power socket already installed. Some do not. If your school bus does not have a DC power socket, one can be obtained at the nearest automotive parts store. These have a “pigtail” that will allow you to tap into the 12-volt electrical system of your school bus rather easily, giving you the ability to charge phones, tablets, laptops, or GPS units. A portable power supply will also work, it may need to be charged while on the way home.
3. For resting or sleeping for the night, either a hammock, low camping type cot, or air mattress
. 4. Depending on the time of year, a blanket, pillow, a pair of sheets
5. Five-gallon bucket [can be used to catch draining fluids, a source of water, or a toilet in case of emergency.
6. Small toolbox:
a. Slotted screwdriver/cross-point screwdriver
b. Small flashlight
e. Larger flashlight with a magnet on the end or side
f. Small socket set that goes up to ¾
g. Crescent Wrench that opens to 3 inches
h. Pair of pliers
i. Vise grips
7. CB radio is a very useful device to have. With a magnetic antenna attached to the side or top of the bus, this will allow you to speak with others on the highways and roadways. You may not always be near a cell signal and being able to talk with someone if you are lost or broken down will bring great peace of mind.
8. GPS unit. GPS units come in a wide variety of models. For a first-time driver a simple GPS to help plan your route home, giving you information about places to refuel or eat, will be quite beneficial and peace of mind insurance. If you have done a roof raise you may want to consider using a GPS unit like those used by over-the-road truckers. This gives you more highway information including bridge or tunnel heights that may help you plan a better and safer trip.
9. It might be a good idea to have with you:
a. 1 gallon of oil
b. 1 bottle of brake fluid
c. 1 bottle of power steering fluid
d. 1 large tire gauge able to check large tires
e. Set of road flares or reflectors provide safe parking in case of an emergency on the side of the road
